Nature-Based, Sustainable Personal Care & Cosmetics Ingredients.

Demand for more natural and sustainable personal care and cosmetics products has never been higher. Consumers want products that are high-quality, all-natural, and do as little harm to the planet as possible. Accordingly, they are carefully reading the labels on their skincare, shampoo, perfume, and lipstick products, taking the time to research and understand the sourcing and environmental impact of each ingredient. 

But many cosmetics and personal care labels contain ingredients derived from unsustainable animal-, plant-, or petroleum-based sources and don’t meet the needs of environmentally-conscious consumers. If these problematic components were replaced by cleaner and more sustainable ingredients, then we could reduce the carbon footprint and the negative environmental impact of the collective industry. 

Conagen is using biotechnology and synthetic biology to do just that, creating a more clean, scalable, and sustainable path forward.

Scalable Green Cosmetics & Personal Care.

Our production platforms use bioconversion and fermentation instead of chemical synthesis or extraction from plants to produce high-value ingredients from renewable feedstocks. Many of these components have been unavailable through traditional production routes, either because they are structurally complex or not able to scale. 

By using bioprocesses, we can quickly and efficiently produce nature-based ingredients that can help build greener cosmetics and personal care brands. We do this on a large scale, making many of our clean ingredients more cost-effective and accessible to customers, and therefore to the average consumer. We can also use our platforms to further innovate, creating molecules with novel structures and more desirable properties, which have not been seen in nature or synthesized using chemistry.

Cleaner Scalable Solutions for Inner and Outer Beauty Products.

Conagen has successfully developed and scaled production processes for many different high-value and multi-functional compounds. Their benefits include skin preservation and repair, but they also help preserve and protect inner beauty, as nutraceuticals, antioxidants, and natural preservatives. Their applications include beauty products, skincare, cosmetics, soaps, and fragrances.

Lipids.

We have a large portfolio of different antioxidants, moisturizers, emollients, and other functional ingredients. Our antioxidants include anti-melanogenic p-coumaric acid and dihydroquercetin (DHQ), a versatile, lipid-soluble super antioxidant. We have also developed a fermentation-based biomanufacturing process for more sustainable squalene production, enabling escape from the ethical and environmental impacts of traditional supply chains.

Our collection of sustainable, nature-identical lipids is available for applications in cosmetics and pharmaceutical formulations.

Amino Acids.

We use fermentation to produce L-ergothioneine in a cost-efficient and sustainable way. This molecule is an important antioxidant, helping to combat aging and oxidative stress. 

We’ve also developed a process for making bio-based collagen, a critical structural protein in our skin and one used ubiquitously across hair, skincare, and many other cosmetics and personal care products.

Phenolics and Flavonoids.

Our phenolics and flavonoids, DHQ, kaempferol, catechins, and curcuminoids, act as powerful antioxidants. They can improve the penetration of other molecules in the skin and can also promote wound healing and collagen synthesis. This makes them valuable nutritional supplements and critical components in many cosmetic and skincare products.

Terpenes and Carotenoids.

Conagen has developed pathways for the biosynthesis of a broad spectrum of terpenes, molecules with diverse tastes and scents, and carotenoids, which give many of the foods we eat their distinctive coloring. Our scalable, bio-based platform allows us to apply these molecules to many different products, including fragrances, food, nutritional supplement, and cosmetic colorants.
