Breast milk contains more than 200 unique human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which act as prebiotics and are responsible for shaping an infant’s gut microbiome, immune system, and central nervous system. Many caregivers rely on formula, fortified with a single HMO, to provide their infants with daily nutrition.
Conagen’s methods for creating HMOs, such as 2’-fucosyllactose (2′-FL), are built using simple enzymes, which means they are compatible with accepted non-GMO labels. For you, that means:
Butyrate, which is present in breast milk, helps support gut health from the very beginning of life. Butyrate deficiency can be linked to many diseases, including allergies, obesity, infections, functional gastrointestinal disorders, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, and others. It’s important for creating tolerance to food in the gut, promoting an anti-inflammatory state, and reducing the development of food allergies.
Despite the attractive nutritional profile of butyrate as a supplement for food, beverages, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals, its use has been limited by its odor until now.
Conagen has developed a new compound, FBA, to deliver a new odorless compound, FBA, making it easier to formulate butyrate into dietary supplements and nutritional products for infants and adults. Our FBA is:
Lactoferrin, an abundant protein in breast milk, helps deliver iron to infants. While iron intake is important at every life stage, it’s especially critical for infants as it shapes early immune and gut function.
But the lactoferrin in infant formula is derived from cow’s milk and is not the same as lactoferrin in breast milk. These differences in the forms of lactoferrin translate to differences in their effects on developing infants. The addition of human lactoferrin would further “humanize” infant formula, but until now, no commercially-relevant source has been available.
